Why Was My Card Declined?

Dolly Card6 min read

The short answer

Check your texts. When a charge is declined, Dolly texts the cardholder the reason and what to do next. Missed it? Text “why was I declined?” to the Dolly number.

The usual reasons are a limit on the card, not enough money in the production account, a blocked store, a fraud check, or a paused card. The card itself is fine. Something about that purchase didn’t pass.

What the decline text says, and what to do

The text saysWhat to do
“$X left on your weekly limit. Need more? Text us how much.” (Your card may have a daily or monthly limit instead.)Reply with the amount you need. Dolly sends the request to your admins and texts you when they answer.
“Not enough funds in the account.”The production’s account is short. Only admins can add money, and Dolly emails them. Wait for them to top it up.
“… are blocked on this card. Need them? Text us why and we’ll ask your admins.”Your production doesn’t allow that kind of store on this card. Reply with why you need it, or use a different store.
“A fraud check stopped it.”Reply YES to the verification text if it was you, then try again within an hour.
Your card is pausedThe text says why and whether you can ask to resume it by text. See Why Is My Card Paused?.
“An earlier $X charge there went through, so there’s no need to try again.”The first swipe worked. Don’t pay twice.

A new card declines until it is activated. See Activating Your Card and Setting a PIN.

For admins: what to check

What to checkWhat it means
Money in the accountThe card can only spend money the production has already put in. A limit on the card is not the same as cash in the account. See Adding Money to a Production Account.
The card limitOpen the card on Cards. Available is what is left this period. Raise it in Card Controls and choose Update Limits.
Pending holdsA hold from a hotel, a rental car, a restaurant or a gas station reduces what is left to spend until it posts or drops off.
The storeBlocked categories and merchants are set in Settings → Spend Restrictions → Restricting Merchants.
The card itselfA paused or closed card declines. The card page shows why it is paused.

To hear about declines as they happen, add yourself under Decline Notice in Settings → Notifications → Production Settings.

A limit and a balance are different

The ceilings on a Dolly card are $50,000 per charge, $100,000 per day and $500,000 per month. A production can set any card lower than that. Those numbers are caps. They are not money sitting on the card.

If the production account does not have the funds, the card declines even when the limit looks fine. Producers add money as the crew spends. There is no cap on total production spend.

Holds make a card look richer than it is

An approved swipe often starts as a hold, not a finished charge. The money is set aside immediately. A $2,000 card with a $300 hotel hold and a $150 dinner hold has $1,550 left, not $2,000.

A tip or a hotel incidental can also land after the swipe and push the card over its limit. The first approval does not promise the final amount will fit. Pending returns do not put money back until they actually post.

A few declines that surprise people

  • Cash. Cards issued after January 23, 2025 cannot withdraw cash. Older cards can, only if that production and that card have cash turned on, and only up to $500 a day. Cash is off unless someone turned it on.
  • Online checkouts. The name, billing zip, expiration and security code have to match the card. A mismatch is a common reason an online order fails when the same card just worked in a store. See Paying Online.
  • A store abroad. A Visa card works anywhere Visa credit is accepted, and a Mastercard works anywhere Mastercard is accepted, unless that country or that kind of store is blocked on the card. The limit is checked in dollars, after the foreign amount is converted.
  • A purchase that already went through. Pausing the card stops new swipes. It does not stop a charge that was already approved.

If you don’t recognize the charge

Reply Fraud to Dolly’s text about that charge. Dolly pauses the card and tells your admins. Then contact Dolly at support@dollycard.com or 1 (508) 203-6861.

Otherwise, don’t keep retrying the same swipe. It usually declines again until the reason in the text is fixed.

Frequently asked questions

Does a decline mean the card is broken?
No. A decline means that purchase was not allowed. The decline text tells you why.
My card showed $7,551 available but was declined for insufficient funds. Why?
Available is what the card’s limit has left. Insufficient funds means the production’s account didn’t have the money. The limit can be high while the account is low. Your admins need to add money.
Who can raise my limit?
Your production’s admins. You can ask by text: reply to the decline text with how much you need, or text Dolly “I need $500 more.” Dolly sends the request to your admins.
Why did the card work this morning and fail tonight?
The limit may be used up, a new hold may be sitting on the card, or the account may be short. The decline text says which.
Can a tip cause a decline later?
A tip can make the final charge larger than the amount that was approved. If that pushes the card over its limit, later purchases can decline even though the meal itself went through.
